Parping is a village located picturesquely in the mountains, situated an hour journey from Kathmandu. For Buddhists it is a special pilgrimage place. There is a cave in Parping where Guru Rinpoche during his meditative retreat realised sadhana of Dorje Phurba. Going to Tibet he stopped here for a year in another cave and tamed demonic protecting deities if Tibet (Twelve Tenma). In Parping there is also an image of Tara self-aroused from the rock, as well as the ancient shrine of Vajrayogini, where Marpa the Translator, while travelling to India, received teachings and initiations from Chitherpa and Paindapa, two disciples of Naropa.
Some time ago assistants of Tenga Rinpoche purchased a piece of land in this unusual place. When it occurred that the house in Parping belonging to the monastery's not suitable for longer retreats, they decided to offer the area to both Rinpoches, to establish a drubkang, a three-year retreat centre. Establishment of the centre was supervised by one of the benefactors, Sherab Wangchuk, a long-time assistant of Tenga Rinpoche. The works took about two years and were completed in autumn 1997. The centre was ceremoniously consecrated.
The first three-year retreat according to the Benchen monastery tradition began in 1999.
In January 2007 Benchen monastery has also opened here an institute of higher philosophical studies (shedra). This is the sixth shedra of Karma Kamtzang school that has been created on exile. |
